Long Beach Island is an 18-mile-long island off the coast of New Jersey. This Jersey shore location is famous for its hundreds of shops, white sandy beaches and many small resort towns. Long Beach Island, also known as LBI, hasn’t had a boardwalk since the 1940s, so it’s a little quieter than some other shore towns. LBI is a great getaway for anyone looking to relax but has enough exciting activities to keep the whole family entertained.
The community of Holgate is south of bustling Beach Haven and north of a wildlife refuge. This area is not fully developed, so many Holgate rental homes have stunning views of the water or the natural landscape. Toward the south, you may also spot the Atlantic City skyline.
Compared to other areas of LBI, Holgate was hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy. Fortunately, this peaceful community was stronger than the storm. Holgate has recovered well, and many homes have recently been built or are newly-renovated.
Since LBI is only a quarter to a half-mile wide, most Holgate rentals are a short walk to the beach. Beaches by Holgate are wider and smoother than those farther north with fluffy sand and inviting dunes. Despite their beauty, these beaches are more peaceful and secluded, as well. During the spring and fall, some even open up into the New Jersey wildlife preserve to the south.
Part of the expansive Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge lies just south of Holgate, NJ, at the southern tip of Long Beach Island. This 2.5-mile stretch of beach and marshland is closed to visitors during the summer to protect local wildlife. In the fall and spring, however, hikers and bird watchers come to enjoy the natural surroundings and see rare species such as the American black duck, Atlantic brant or piping plover.
Local shops will rent you all the water sports equipment that you need to liven up your trip. Race across the waves at up to 50 miles per hour on one, two or three-person jet skis. Party on the seas in a pontoon boat. Go fishing in a kayak or skiff boat -- after all, LBI has been a destination for fishing and crabbing since the 19th century, and there are still tons of marine life around the island.
If you’re willing to hop on the island-wide shuttle, you can check out other LBI attractions, such as:
